Blog Post for Session 4

In Romans 12:1-3, we are told to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to God because this is the most holy form of worship that we can offer him. We are not meant to conform to the world but rather to adjust our lives to God's will. Finally, we are not meant to think of ourselves too highly but think of ourselves with sober judgment.

The quote from Palmer's book tells us that we cannot teach students the great things of the universe unless we realize how great we are as individuals. I do believe that teachers have a responsibility to their students to help them develop their own sense of self as well as self-esteem. I do think that students need to have a sense of self worth in order to be successful learners simply because it is one less thing that is a distraction from their learning. When they are confident in who they are as individuals than they are more likely to participate in class and be more successful as a learner.

Although each of the quotes has several great points, I do believe that they are at odds with one another. The first quote from the Bible says that we should not think too highly of ourselves because we God's creations; on the other hand the quote from Palmer is about believing we are great so we can teach students that they are great. Even though they are contradictory, I do find myself agreeing with both of them.
